The Billion Dollar Blood Business.

Before I watched this video, I really didn't know that Blood Banks anywhere paid people for their blood...I had heard something about people being paid but in the 50 years since I started giving blood, none of the blood centers I went to offered money to those who donated blood.  But after watching this video I realized why the Blood Bank of Hawaii might not want to pay people to donate their blood:  If the Blood Bank of Hawaii did pay people to give blood,  it would attract the down and out people in our society.  Many of whom have drug problems and maybe the Blood Bank of Hawaii would perfer people with missing teeth not showing up at their blood drives trying to earn money by offering their blood...anything is possible.  But probably, HBB wants to make sure its blood supply is safe and having the healthiest donors available insures a safe blood supply.

I was attending a luncheon on Maui and a woman donor (Hawaiian looking), sitting at the same table as me (we were the only two people sitting at this table at the time), made a remark to me that kind of insinuated that I was a homeless person and she didn't think that the Hawaii Blood Bank paid people money for their donations. Maybe she came up with this inference because I had long hair and I was thin---as this was my only conclusion.  She had an obvious disdain for the homeless people and that became even more obvious when she told me that she wished the homeless people would be taken to the middle of the ocean and dropped off there.  How I was able to maintain my composure with this disparaging attitude while sitting at the same table as me is remarkable.

I donated blood many months after Mayor Mitch Roth paraded in front of a bunch of blood donors, who have reached over 100 donations in their lifetime, and then I received an email that was letting me know that if I fly to Honolulu, from the BIG ISLAND, on my own own dime, I can get a free spam...

Did they really believe I would be enthusiastic about spending $200 to get a free spam?

I just gave the Blood Bank Liquid Gold and they want me to spend
$200 in airfare to get a free spam in Honolulu?

Now, I am starting to believe that the Blood Bank of Hawaii is mocking me intentionally just like someone at the Bank of Hawaii went out of their way to mess with my head by lowering my credit score or KTA placing Raley's products in its ad as a way to say FU FRANK. 
Maybe it should be called FWDS frank website derangement syndrome.

I never encountered this kind of nonsense when I volunteered my time assisting the Blood Bank in Sacramento.  There were no thank-you luncheons where a person would feel belittled by other donors, etc...  I was used many times assisting with mobile blood drives; assisting as a blood bank caller to inform current donors that it was time for another gracious donation...and they didn't play games with the people...they didn't pull out their phony card of appreciation, as when they did something it wasn't announced and it was totally sincere like the holiday card I received below that was genuinely an act of appreciation:

They just sent it to me unannounced!

I guess the Blood Bank of Hawaii can't find enough blood donors amongst its residents.

The CEO of BBOH should spend her time trying to get residents to donate blood.  Knock on doors if you have to and get the the entire BLOOD BANK OF HAWAII BOARD to assist you:

I guess it is easier to just give the taxpayers a credit if they donate blood.  Well, if it works, go for it.
